Tools of the Trade for Learning Cybersecurity
I created this post for the Studyblr Masterpost Jam, check out the tag for more cool masterposts from folks in the studyblr community!
Cybersecurity professionals use a lot of different tools to get the job done. There are plenty of fancy and expensive tools that enterprise security teams use, but luckily there are also lots of brilliant people writing free and open-source software. In this post, I'm going to list some popular free tools that you can download right now to practice and learn with.
In my opinion, one of the most important tools you can learn how to use is a virtual machine. If you're not already familiar with Linux, this is a great way to learn. VMs are helpful for separating all your security tools from your everyday OS, isolating potentially malicious files, and just generally experimenting. You'll need to use something like VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation (Workstation Pro is now free for personal use, but they make you jump through hoops to download it).
Below is a list of some popular cybersecurity-focused Linux distributions that come with lots of tools pre-installed:
Kali is a popular distro that comes loaded with tools for penetration testing
REMnux is a distro built for malware analysis
honorable mention for FLARE-VM, which is not a VM on its own, but a set of scripts for setting up a malware analysis workstation & installing tools on a Windows VM.
SANS maintains several different distros that are used in their courses. You'll need to create an account to download them, but they're all free:
Slingshot is built for penetration testing
SIFT Workstation is a distro that comes with lots of tools for digital forensics
These distros can be kind of overwhelming if you don't know how to use most of the pre-installed software yet, so just starting with a regular Linux distribution and installing tools as you want to learn them is another good choice for learning.
Free Software
Wireshark: sniff packets and explore network protocols
Ghidra and the free version of IDA Pro are the top picks for reverse engineering
for digital forensics, check out Eric Zimmerman's tools - there are many different ones for exploring & analyzing different forensic artifacts
pwntools is a super useful Python library for solving binary exploitation CTF challenges
CyberChef is a tool that makes it easy to manipulate data - encryption & decryption, encoding & decoding, formatting, conversions… CyberChef gives you a lot to work with (and there's a web version - no installation required!).
Burp Suite is a handy tool for web security testing that has a free community edition
Metasploit is a popular penetration testing framework, check out Metasploitable if you want a target to practice with
SANS also has a list of free tools that's worth checking out.
Programming Languages
Knowing how to write code isn't a hard requirement for learning cybersecurity, but it's incredibly useful. Any programming language will do, especially since learning one will make it easy to pick up others, but these are some common ones that security folks use:
Python is quick to write, easy to learn, and since it's so popular, there are lots of helpful libraries out there.
PowerShell is useful for automating things in the Windows world. It's built on .NET, so you can practically dip into writing C# if you need a bit more power.
Go is a relatively new language, but it's popular and there are some security tools written in it.
Rust is another new-ish language that's designed for memory safety and it has a wonderful community. There's a bit of a steep learning curve, but learning Rust makes you understand how memory bugs work and I think that's neat.
If you want to get into reverse engineering or malware analysis, you'll want to have a good grasp of C and C++.
Other Tools for Cybersecurity
There are lots of things you'll need that aren't specific to cybersecurity, like:
a good system for taking notes, whether that's pen & paper or software-based. I recommend using something that lets you work in plain text or close to it.
general command line familiarity + basic knowledge of CLI text editors (nano is great, but what if you have to work with a system that only has vi?)
familiarity with git and docker will be helpful
There are countless scripts and programs out there, but the most important thing is understanding what your tools do and how they work. There is no magic "hack this system" or "solve this forensics case" button. Tools are great for speeding up the process, but you have to know what the process is. Definitely take some time to learn how to use them, but don't base your entire understanding of security on code that someone else wrote. That's how you end up as a "script kiddie", and your skills and knowledge will be limited.
Feel free to send me an ask if you have questions about any specific tool or something you found that I haven't listed. I have approximate knowledge of many things, and if I don't have an answer I can at least help point you in the right direction.

Hey do you have any cool personal worldbuilding detail hcs for the Uglies world? (Whether it’s about Tally’s city, any of the groups like the specials, Uglies, pretties, etc. that you would like to share? I’m really into the books myself and I’ve always wondered how the worldbuilding could be enhanced with just cool details that make it feel more lived in and well thought-out.
For me that is unusually difficult, since the worldbuilding in the books is already so densely packed and some of the best I've ever seen. I also love, and this is something Scott Westerfeld does in his other books too, how the characters feel truly shaped by this world, not like people from our time transplanted in the future.
So it is more some small detail stuff instead of filling in big gaps, but:
Before the movie came out, I had the headcanon that Uglies would not shave at all except for facial hair. Why should they? They're ugly anyway, why the effort? And I am a bit frustrated that the movie didn't actually went to that logical conclusion, but also, you can't turn off patriarchy and Hollywood beauty standards to make one movie more striking, and it would probably have been massively uncomfortable for the actresses, given how often women would get harassed just for having leg hair or something. But even now I still headcanon that it's relatively unusual to expect Uglies to shave, and that this is something Tally does is a sign of just how much of an hardliner Seatac aka the City is. Tally is flabbergasted as she learns about this after traveling around post-canon.
Despite being such a highly technological society, most people end up going into the trades as the New Pretty phase ends at 22, and only twenty or so percent end up in university. Who ends up where is mostly determined by aptitude tests, though it is possible to choose to some degree.
Something that is kind of marginally shown in the Impostors series: They have pretty much the same beauty standards as our culture, but they have vastly different ideas about gender, which also slightly vary between cities. Basically no different expectations between genders for character, life trajectory and skillset, except for behavior at balls or superficial m/f romance things (bringing flowers etc) or something, clothing and body types, and even for that it is much more fluid than our culture. The outlines the morphological committee gives are kind of gendered in the sense that they group certain traits together like "if that person choose to have big boobs, they also need to have shoulders that aren't wider than this", but they are not completely binary, and it's perfectly possible to chose combinations of "contrasting" gendered traits as long as the morphological committee agrees that the person is pretty afterwards. So Dr. Cable looking pretty unambiguously binary female is perhaps not quite an outlier, but definitely more rare than today.
Everybody over sixteen (or eighteen in some other cities) has these lesions making them lesser creative, which means that not just art and media plays a lesser role than in our society, the fictional media they do have quite often tends to be the reboot of the reboot of the expanded story of a side characters from that sequels prequel.
Specials process things at a much faster rate than everybody else, which also means that what blurrs together to a video for everybody else is just a fast succession of pictures. Haven't decided yet if they have software to "accelerate" the amount of pictures, or if they, since they are cyborgs, can simply turn off seeing this fast for the duration of watching the video.
Darker one about the Specials: They aren't even really capable of comprehending this, given how they're surged to feel invincible, but they usually don't end up getting as old as every other citizen of the City. They usually are either killed in service, or their body randomly rapidly breaks down from the strain of all these modifications and superhuman efforts several years from the usual dying age.
Macabre and somewhat gorey: So they are skinning people for the surgery to then put on new, more flawless skin, right? Almost every time a new year of doctors sees the surgical tanks in action, at least one person in the group either ends up vomiting or nearly vomiting.
Since Seatac is near the former Canadian border, both Tally and Shay learned French in school. Shay is somewhat fluent, but Tally very much isn't. Good for Tally that she is a cyborg with a built in translator matrix.
The reason Maddy and Az could escape so well is that Special Circumstances was in somewhat of a cold war situation with Special Circumstances from Paz at that time, Paz wanted to alter the lesions by utilizing emotions more and Seatac thought that was too dangerous, and so focused on that instead of hunting them down. Dr. Cable realized what a massive problem they would end up becoming right from the beginning, but had been with Special Circumstances for barely a year at this point, as a medic, not a tactician, and so had not enough power to change anything about that yet.
Seatac has an antimissile system that is under control of Special Circumstances. It has never been used in the entire history of the city except around 180 years before Dr. Cable came into power, to shoot down a medium sized meteor headed for the suburbs, and mostly just exists because maintaining it is just as much effort as breaking it down.
While they clearly still have eurocentric beauty ideals, they don't have much of the other surface level rascism anymore, and they also don't have capitalism anymore, so every city is more or less the same level of wealthy, no matter where on Earth it is. This results in the media that becomes global phenomena more or less randomly coming from all over the world. In the time Tally and Shay were Uglies, this was an rather raunchy high fantasy movie trilogy from Hlotse (Lesotho). They were too young to watch it, but managed neverthless through semi-legal internet tricks. Shay ended up having Whatpatt erotica level realistic fantasies about the female warrior main characters, Tally just watched it with Peris in uncomfortable silence over the several minute long sex scenes.
People aren't registered by name or ID, but by their genetic code. That makes it, apart from surface level transphobia not existing anymore, quite easy to change ones name. Dr. Cable went through several names about as good as you'd imagine a elementary school girl to come up with before settling with "Nyah" entering the Ugly age phase.
On that note, something I expected the movie to debunk looking at the role listings on IMDB, but it never actually came up (I think the books work with this, but not hundred percent sure, would need to look up the scene where Tally sees her parents): Couples usually keep their last name, and eventual children inherent the last name of the parent with the same gender as them. Trans people, or people with parents who have the same gender can chose or combine both names. So "Youngblood" is Ellies, aka Tallys mothers, last name. Dr. Cable wasn't registered with her mothers last name "Cable", but choose to change it as she was old enough to understand that system. And a bittersweet consequence of this headcanon: David inherents Az last name, not Maddys, meaning he has this remembrance of him even after Az death.
That were all I came up with out of the top of my head, there's probably even more I used in fics or so.

Can the US really enforce a global AI chip ban?
When Huawei shocked the global tech industry with its Mate 60 Pro smartphone featuring an advanced 7-nanometer chip despite sweeping US technology restrictions, it demonstrated that innovation finds a way even under the heaviest sanctions. The US response was swift and predictable: tighter export controls and expanded restrictions.
Now, with reports suggesting Huawei’s Ascend AI chips are approaching Nvidia-level performance—though the Chinese company remains characteristically silent about these developments—America has preemptively escalated its semiconductor war to global proportions. 
The Trump administration’s declaration that using Huawei’s Ascend chips “anywhere in the world” violates US export controls reveals more than policy enforcement—it exposes a fundamental fear that American technological dominance may no longer be guaranteed through restrictions alone.
This global AI chip ban emerged on May 14, 2025, when President Donald Trump’s administration rescinded the Biden-era AI Diffusion Rule without revealing details of a replacement policy. 
Instead, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced guidance to “strengthen export controls for overseas AI chips,” specifically targeting Huawei’s Ascend processors. 
The new guidelines warn of “enforcement actions” including imprisonment and fines for any global business found using these Chinese-developed chips—a fundamental departure from traditional export controls, which typically govern what leaves a country’s borders, not what happens entirely outside them.
The scope of America’s tech authority
The South China Morning Post reports that these new guidelines explicitly single out Huawei’s Ascend chips after scrapping the Biden administration’s country-tiered “AI diffusion” rule. But the implications of this global AI chip ban extend far beyond bilateral US-China tensions. 
By asserting jurisdiction over global technology choices, America essentially demands that sovereign nations and independent businesses worldwide comply with its domestic policy preferences.
This extraterritorial approach raises fundamental questions about national sovereignty and international trade. Should a Brazilian AI startup be prevented from using the most cost-effective chip solution simply because those chips are manufactured by a Chinese company? 
Should European research institutions abandon promising collaborations because they involve hardware Washington deems unacceptable?
According to Financial Times reporting, BIS stated that Huawei’s Ascend 910B, 910C, and 910D were all subject to the regulations as they were likely “designed with certain US software or technology or produced with semiconductor manufacturing equipment that is the direct product of certain US-origin software or technology, or both.”
Industry resistance to universal controls
Even within the United States, the chipmaking sector expresses alarm about Washington’s semiconductor policies. The aggressive expansion of export controls creates uncertainty beyond Chinese companies, affecting global supply chains and innovation partnerships built over decades.
“Washington’s new guidelines are essentially forcing global tech firms to pick a side – Chinese or US hardware – which will further deepen the tech divide between the world’s two largest economies,” analysts note. This forced binary choice ignores the nuanced reality of modern technology development, where innovation emerges from diverse, international collaborations.
The economic implications prove staggering. Recent analysis indicates Huawei’s Ascend 910B AI chip delivers 80% of Nvidia A100’s efficiency when training large language models, though “in some other tests, Ascend chips can beat the A100 by 20%.” 
By blocking access to competitive alternatives, this global AI chip ban may inadvertently stifle innovation and maintain artificial market monopolies.
The innovation paradox
Perhaps most ironically, policies intended to maintain American technological leadership may undermine it. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang acknowledged earlier this month that Huawei was “one of the most formidable technology companies in the world,” noting that China was “not behind” in AI development.
Attempting to isolate such capabilities through global restrictions may accelerate the development of parallel technology ecosystems, ultimately reducing American influence rather than preserving it. 
The secrecy surrounding Huawei’s Ascend chips—with the company keeping “details of its AI chips close to its chest, with only public information coming from third-party teardown reports”—has intensified with US sanctions.
Following escalating restrictions, Huawei stopped officially disclosing information about the series, including release dates, production schedules, and fabrication technologies. The chips specified in current US restrictions, including the Ascend 910C and 910D, haven’t even been officially confirmed by Huawei.
Geopolitical ramifications
In a South China Morning Post’s report, Chim Lee, a senior analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit, warns that “if the guidance is enforced strictly, it is likely to provoke retaliation from China” and could become “a negotiating point in ongoing trade talks between Washington and Beijing.” 
This assessment underscores the counterproductive nature of aggressive unilateral action in an interconnected global economy.
The semiconductor industry thrives on international collaboration, shared research, and open competition. Policies that fragment this ecosystem serve no one’s long-term interests—including America’s. 
As the global community grapples with challenges from climate change to healthcare innovation, artificial barriers preventing the best minds from accessing optimal tools ultimately harm human progress.
Beyond binary choices
The question isn’t whether nations should protect strategic interests—they should and must. But when export controls extend “anywhere in the world,” we cross from legitimate national security policy into technological authoritarianism. The global technology community deserves frameworks that balance security concerns with innovation imperatives.
This global AI chip ban risks accelerating the technological fragmentation it seeks to prevent. History suggests markets divided by political decree often spawn parallel innovation ecosystems that compete more effectively than those operating under artificial constraints.
Rather than extending controls globally, a strategic approach would focus on out-innovating competitors through superior technology and international partnerships. The current path toward technological bifurcation serves neither American interests nor global innovation—it simply creates a more fragmented, less efficient world where artificial barriers replace natural competition.
The semiconductor industry’s future depends on finding sustainable solutions that address legitimate security concerns without dismantling the collaborative networks that drive technological advancement. As this global AI chip ban takes effect, the world watches to see whether innovation will flourish through competition or fragment through control.

The FSMsmart deception

Federal court fines operator of binary options scam $561K
A federal court in Ohio has ordered Jared Davis to pay $561,971 in restitution to the victims of a fraudulent scheme. Davis is the mastermind of a $10 million binary options scam. The individual operated fraudulent binary options brands: Option King, Options Mint, and Option Queen.
Federal court fines $561K to the mastermind of a binary options scam
Davis operated this scheme between 2012 and 2016 under Erie Marketing, LLC. According to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the court imposed an order on Friday. The regulator said Davis was also facing a permanent registration and several trading bans.
The judgment also comes after an action was taken against Davis in September 2019. At the time, the CFTC had filed charges against Davis for running a similar scheme. Davis has pled guilty to three counts of personal tax evasion. He has also admitted to 11 counts of wire fraud he committed on behalf of his company known as Erie Marketing
US prosecutors in the Northern District of Ohio initiated the charges facing Davis. The statement released by the CFTC also said that the regulator had earlier said that Davis was sentenced to 30 months in prison in January. He was also charged with subsequent three years of supervised release.
The binary options operator was also targeted with several monetary penalties, with the expected payments totaling around $7 million. According to the regulator, the victims of this scheme would also receive compensation.
“He was also ordered to pay a $300,000 fine, $1,039,208 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and to be jointly and severally liable for the debts of Erie Marketing, LLC, including $656,493.20 in restitution to victims and a $4.4 million fine,” the statement from the CFTC said.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has also said that the case against Davis was still pending. In February 2019, the regulator secured a partial settlement with Davis dependent on the court determining the disgorgement and civil penalties at a later date.
Davis operated a $10M scam
The derivatives regulator said Davis operated this scam using internet and website marketing campaigns. The activities targeted investors based in the US and other countries. He promoted trading opportunities on off-exchange binary options on commodities, forex, indices, and stocks.
However, the binary options executive also had other plans, as he made several misrepresentations and hid access to material facts about the trading activities. He failed to reveal that he took opposing positions on each trade. The CFTC also said that Davis severally manipulated the settings of his options trading software to raise the odds of customers making losses.
The charges against Davis come as David Butler, the operator of binary options companies like SpotFN and Binary FN, pled guilty to defrauding investors of $2.9 million using binary options schemes. John Black, another individual based in California, was also ordered to pay $29 million in restitution and penalties.

US Operator of Binary Option Brands Fined $516K for $10M Scam
A federal court in Ohio has ordered Jared Davis, the mastermind of a $10 million binary options scam, to pay $561,971 in restitution to defrauded victims. Davis operated the fraudulent binary options brands, Option Mint, Option King and Option Queen, between 2012 and 2016 under Erie Marketing, LLC.

Davis Faces Multiple Fines
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced the court order on Friday, noting that the former Ohio resident was hit with permanent registration and trading bans. The judgment comes after action taken against Davis in September 2019 was filed by the US derivatives markets watchdog.
Separately, Davis pleaded guilty to three counts of personal tax evasion and 11 counts of wire fraud on behalf of his firm, Erie Marketing, all of the charges were initiated by the US prosecutors in the Northern District of Ohio.
In the statement by the CFTC, the regulator noted that Davis earlier in January was sentenced to 30 months' imprisonment and a subsequent three years of supervised release. Alongside his company, the binary options operator was hit with other multiple monetary penalties with expected payments now totaling about $7 million.
“He was also ordered to pay a $300,000 fine, $1,039,208 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and to be jointly and severally liable for the debts of Erie Marketing, LLC, including $656,493.20 in restitution to victims and a $4.4 million fine,” the CFTC explained, giving a breakdown of the other penalties.
On the other hand, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s case against Davis remains pending, the CFTC said. The securities regulator in February 2019 had entered a partial settlement with Davis based on conditions that the court “will determine disgorgement and civil penalties at a later date.”
How Davis Ran the $10M Scam: CFTC According to the CFTC, Davis perpetrated the scam by deploying internet and website marketing campaigns as well as call centre operators. His activities targeted investors in the US and other countries, touting trading opportunities in off-exchange binary options on commodities, forex, stocks and indices.
However, the binary options executive had other plans as he made ‘misrepresentations’ and hid ‘material facts’ about the trading business from investors. For instance, he failed to disclose that he “effectively took the opposing positions on each trade,” the CFTC said, adding that Davis behind the scenes frequently manipulated the settings of his options trading software in order “to increase the odds of customers losses."
Meanwhile, David Butler, the operator of binary options firms, SpotFN and Binary FN, recently pleaded guilty to defrauding investors of $2.9 million through binary options schemes. Furthermore, California-based John Black and his affiliated firms were recently slapped with over $29 million in restitution and penalties.
